Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Terry Venables has said he hopes Harry Kane rejects Real Madrid to stay at the club.

Premier League top scorer Kane, who now has 22 goals for the season after his late equaliser against Liverpool, has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish giants in the near future.

Venables was himself behind a similar transfer in 1986 when he brought England and Everton striker Gary Lineker to Barcelona for less than £3million.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Venables however expressed hopes that Kane would not do the same: “The fact that Real Madrid need more firepower to match Barcelona’s surge means the world’s top goalscorers will be targets.  Spurs may have a fight on their hands. I hope Harry stays here. We don’t want another of our Premier League talents being lured by Spain’s big two.

“Spurs will have to match his ambition and they will also need to move quickly with a contract offer, especially with some of the money being thrown around by Manchester City and Manchester United. You can’t ask Harry to settle for less… not for a player of his class.”

Venables went on to suggest that Kane could possibly form a lethal partnership up front for England with Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

“Harry could play well with Jamie Vardy up there for England. They can be absolutely lethal together. With Jamie’s pace, England could play Harry deeper. That way, you make the most of Jamie’s quick reactions and it might create space for the Tottenham striker.” he said.

OPINION

Venables is merely echoing the sentiments of anyone involved with Tottenham. Kane underlined his value to the team with a nerveless last-minute penalty against Liverpool on Sunday, coming after he had a spot-kick saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius. It would be a sad day to see Kane leave, and the club must recognise his value to the side with a new contract. Kane is not the sort of player who will push for a new deal, but he will be well aware of his value to this team. That needs to be rewarded with a lucrative new deal, which would warn off any suitors, including the lurking Real Madrid.
