Graeme Souness has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane should leave for Real Madrid this summer, and says the 24-year-old could become the world’s first £200million player.

Liverpool legend Souness started out his career as an apprentice at Tottenham under Bill Nicholson, but only made one appearance for the club before being sold to Middlesbrough.

In a column for The Times, Souness said Kane needed to leave Spurs this summer if a move becomes a possibility, and made the big claim about the striker’s possible world-record price tag.

“I believe that Harry Kane should leave for Real Madrid this summer, if he gets the chance. The fee Real will have to pay for Kane will start with a two and be followed by eight zeros. I reckon that he could become the first £200m player.

“They will pay that premium because putting the ball in the back of the net regularly is the hardest thing to do in football and, given his age, Kane should only get better. When Real come calling, they usually get who they want. Yes, Kylian Mbappe signed for PSG for £165m from Monaco, but how badly did Real want him?” he said.

Souness went on to explain why he thought Kane was ready for Real Madrid, and also why his teammate Dele Alli is not quite there yet.

“Kane’s ready for Real Madrid, but Dele Alli isn’t. I’ve seen a definite improvement in Kane since he came into Tottenham’s team, but not to the same extent in Alli. Similarly, Real Madrid can’t be considering Mauricio Pochettino based on what he’s won. His publicity is great and he’s deemed to have done a good job at Tottenham, but if he’s being touted for the manager’s job at Real it tells me there’s a lack of candidates,” said Souness.

Tottenham star Kane has been continuously linked to a move to Spain to join Los Blancos, with his goalscoring exploits in the Premier League right up there with the very best in Europe.

The front man broke the Premier League record for goals in a calendar year, scoring 39 in 2017 to surpass Alan Shearer’s record that had stood for 22 years.

The 24-year-old is on red-hot form once again this season for Spurs, currently sitting on 21 Premier League goals and 30 in all competitions so far.

OPINION

Here we go again. It is doubtful that we will ever hear the end of speculation linking Kane to a move to Real until the move actually happens, or Spurs win a major trophy. His goalscoring form will obviously put him on the radar of Europe’s top clubs, and Real are always going to be the biggest name in the hat. That is especially considering the business Spurs have done with Real before, selling Luka Modric and Gareth Bale on to Los Blancos. Souness’ other claim that Kane could become the world’s first £200million player is probably correct, if he makes the move this summer. There is no way that Spurs would let him go for less.
