Heung-Min Son has revealed that he doesn’t share a special handshake with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino as he is too scared to attempt one.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, the 25-year-old who has become famous for his part in the elaborate handshakes that the Tottenham team exchange when celebrating their goals, shared why he hasn’t created a handshake for Pochettino.

“I don’t have one with the gaffer,” confessed Son, as quoted by the magazine.

“I just say, ‘Hello’.

“I’m too scared to try it with him!”

Son went on to share that the unique handshakes are special to him as they help him show that he sees his teammates as friends, not just players he plays alongside.

“For me, the handshakes are a special thing. I don’t see all of these guys as just my team-mates, I see them as friends and I want to show that,” revealed Son.

“That’s why I’ve got a different one for every player, I think everybody enjoys it.”

The winger has been in tremendous form for Spurs this season, scoring 11 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions.

OPINION

It’s interesting that Son is too scared to try a handshake with his manager, as Pochettino doesn’t seem like an intimidating figure. The Argentinean manager seems very relaxed and like he appreciates a good joke during his press conferences. So it’s intriguing to hear how one of Tottenham’s key players is “scared” to try a weird handshake with him. This is good to hear from a Spurs supporters perspective, as it shows that Son respects his manager too much to risk messing up his relationship with his boss over a silly handshake, and players are more likely to perform for managers they respect.
