Report reveals two main factors in Alderweireld contract stand-off

|

Tottenham Hotspur are remaining calm over Toby Alderweireld’s contract stand-off for two clear reasons, according to football.london.

The football news site report that Spurs are not panicking over the Belgian’s failure to sign a new deal yet because both parties are expected to take stock of the situation in the summer, barring any sudden developments.

Waiting until the summer will allow Alderweireld to see if there is the prospect of Champions League football at Spurs’ new stadium next season, and will allow the club time to tie up new deals for Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

It is said that new deals for the duo will see the club’s wage ceiling increased, meaning a new bumper deal for the 28-year-old enforcer becomes easier to work out.

The second reported reason is that Mauricio Pochettino is thought to have huge long-term hopes for fellow centre-back Davinson Sanchez, who is seen as the bedrock of the Spurs defence for years to come.

Sanchez’s brilliant form since his £42million move from Ajax in the summer has eased the pressure on Spurs with regards to Alderweireld, and a decision is reportedly to be made in a few months.

OPINION

It is quite obvious that much of furore surrounding Alderweireld’s contract situation has been drummed up by the press, with the enforcer quite obviously to be a man in demand this summer. The noises from Spurs have always seemed calm, and this report explains exactly why that is. If there is Champions League football to come at the new stadium next season, and Tottenham’s wage ceiling is indeed increased by then, there would seem to be no reason for Alderweireld to leave. But as reported here, the situation will only be clear in the summer, and this drama surrounding the stand-off is a bit unnecessary.
