Sky Sports journalist Guillem Balague has dismissed rumours linking Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino to Real Madrid, saying it ‘doesn’t make sense.’

Questions have begun to be asked about current Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, who has overseen a disastrous season so far for Los Blancos.

There have been widespread suggestions in the media that Madrid would move for Pochettino, but Balague does not see it happening.

In a column for Sky Sports, he said: “Everybody in Spain is mentioning Mauricio Pochettino but I keep saying it just doesn’t make sense. He’s taking Tottenham into a new stadium and a new era.

“There’s a plan there and of course he has no buyout clause so Real would have to convince Daniel Levy to let him go. It doesn’t make much sense in my eyes.”

Real currently sit in fourth in La Liga, 17 points behind bitter rivals and league leaders Barcelona, with one game in hand.

They have also been knocked out of the Copa Del Rey, losing on away goals to 13th-placed La Liga side Leganes, and finished second in their Champions League group to Tottenham.

Their form has shown improvement in recent weeks, with Real overcoming a scare to beat Paris St-Germain 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, and winning four out of their last five league matches.

OPINION

It will be a relief to Tottenham fans to hear this from Balague, but where Real are involved, anything can happen. If Real want something, they usually get it, and losing Pochettino right now would be the worst thing to happen to Tottenham. The Argentine has been the man behind the club’s recent success, and with the new stadium close to completion, the future is looking bright for Spurs. However, Pochettino is key to that, and Real may look to spoil the party in the summer.
