Newcastle United fans were jubilant on social media after a reliable journalist reported that Islam Slimani was set to feature against Manchester United on Sunday.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie provided the update on the centre-forward via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday, revealing that Slimani had taken part in training.

Slimani joined the Magpies on loan from Leicester City on transfer deadline day, but a thigh injury kept him making his debut against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez previously confirmed that the 29-year-old had a chance of playing against Manchester United on Sunday, after not being ready for the match against Palace.

“He was not ready,” said the Magpies boss, as quoted by the Chronicle Live.

“He was training on Saturday, he will train tomorrow, and he will have a chance for next Sunday.

“He must compete, like Dubravka and Kenedy.”

Newcastle United have struggled for goals this season having only scored 23 goals in 25 league games and the news that their new striker was set to play against Manchester United caused fans to react with glee.

One supporter revealed it was the best news of the day as the Magpies desperately need him for Sunday’s game, while another urge the centre-forward forward to make himself a legend by putting in a good performance on Sunday.
