Manchester United are keeping tabs on Toby Alderweireld’s contract situation at Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The newspaper claim that Alderweireld is stalling on a new contract at Spurs with his current deal running out in the summer of 2019, meaning he is set for a crucial decision on his future this summer.
The Evening News report that Jose Mourinho is prioritising a central midfield signing, but the 28-year-old’s ongoing contract saga is understood to be of interest to United.
It is said that United would face heavy competition for Alderweireld’s signature, with Spurs possibly to be forced into selling him this summer.
The club have an option to extend his contract by one year, but that would trigger a clause that could lead him to be sold for just £25million.
Good move for Tottenham Hotspur?
Spurs must keep Alderweireld at all costs, as the Belgian has been such a brilliant player for them since joining in 2015.
He transformed their defence from being consistently leaky, to becoming the best in the country for two years running, and that is invaluable going forward.

Likely to happen?
Alderweireld’s omission from the Spurs squad to face Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday evening has led to fresh speculation about his future.
However, his representatives are known to have held talks over a new deal, and there is no concrete suggestion yet that he is unhappy at the club.
We will have to wait until summer for all to be revealed however, and this one could go either way.
