Liverpool have begun talks with star man Roberto Firmino over a bumper new contract for the Brazil international, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper report that the Reds are in negotiations with the 26-year-old and are expected to agree a new deal quickly.

Firmino’s current deal, signed when he joined the club for £29million in 2015, runs until the summer of 2020, and Liverpool are hoping to tie him down to an extension.

The Brazilian has been in the form of his life for the Reds this season, so far scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists in all competitions after becoming the club’s first-choice striker.

Liverpool currently sit in third in the Premier League table, just two points behind second-placed rivals Manchester United, and are basically qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals after thrashing Porto 5-0 away in their last-16 first-leg tie.

Reports emerged last week to suggest that Liverpool were ready to hand Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane new deals, so it only makes sense for Firmino to be offered one as well. The trio have helped Liverpool move seamlessly on from the departure of Philippe Coutinho in January, and will be the key going forward for Liverpool too. Firmino is in the form of his life at the moment and his work for the side is finally being appreciated.
