Liverpool

Liverpool best XI v Porto

|

Loris Karius (Goalkeeper) – Karius seems to have overtaken Simon Mignolet as Liverpool’s number one, and despite neither really inspiring confidence, the German looks the best bet on current form. Retains his place.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Right-back) – Joe Gomez has returned from injury for this one, but Alexander-Arnold must start anyway. The youngster’s delivery from the right is always spot-on, and with a break in fixtures after this one there is no need to rest him. Retains his place.

Joel Matip (Centre-back) – Matip has not been on his best form in recent weeks, and was dropped for the Spurs match. He did however come back to keep a clean sheet against the Saints, and a partnership between him and van Dijk looks most solid. Retains his place.

Virgil van Dijk (Centre-back) – Van Dijk has not had the perfect start to his Anfield career, but in the long-run he will improve this defence immensely. Easily their best defender, must play on Wednesday. Retains his place.

Alberto Moreno (Left-back) – Moreno was the first-choice at left-back earlier this season, but an injury to the Spanish flyer has opened the door for Andy Robertson, who has seized his opportunity well. However, Moreno’s extra pace will count for a lot against Porto, and he must be given the nod. Moreno for Robertson.
