Arsenal are worried that midfielder Aaron Ramsey will deliberately run down his contract into its final year to force a massive pay rise, according to The Times.

The newspaper report that the Wales international is out of contract in the summer of 2019, and the club have begun talks over a new deal for the 27-year-old.

The Times claim that Arsenal are determined to avoid the situation they faced with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil this season, but there are fears that Ramsey will attempt to manoeuvre into a similar position.

It is said that Ramsey is currently earning around £110,000-a-week, but is likely to be pushing for a big pay rise after the arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who are both on £170,000-a-week.

OPINION

It would be a kick in the teeth for Arsenal to have to deal with a similar situation to the one they have faced this season, which saw Alexis Sanchez leave and Mesut Ozil get a bumper pay rise. They have obviously made a concerted effort to avoid such a scenario, but would be powerless if Ramsey did want to bully them into a corner. On the other hand, Ramsey is not as irreplaceable as the other two mentioned, and there may be other ways to get around such a move.
