The 19-year-old secured a move to Elland Road in January from Premier League side West Brom and was expected to try boost competition in attack.
However, the attacker arrived at the Yorkshire giants with an injury problem and the club have now announced a fresh issue with the youngster.
Leeds confirmed on Wednesday on their official website that Roberts is set for an “extended period out” after injuring his ankle in training.
The Englishman is set to see a specialist as initial scans show a small crack on his shin, but the club are yet to put a timescale on his return.
Roberts’ debut will have to wait despite his January arrival and the teenager has sent a message to Leeds fans on social media.
“Absolutely gutted its this injury, I will be working as hard as I can to come back even stronger and better to repay the patience the fans have put in me,” Roberts wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Roberts is a highly-rated youngster that Leeds fans were excited to see add some pace to the attack, but manager Paul Heckingbottom will have to use his current squad to find the answers. The Whites need to find a consistent goalscorer if they are to make up ground to the play-offs and the early signs are that the experienced Pierre-Michel Lasogga could provide the answer for the new manager. Meanwhile, Caleb Ekuban has returned from injury and attacker Kemar Roofe has shown he can score goals when deployed in a more advanced position. Lasogga may be the best option at Leeds’ disposal right now and it is unlikely that the fairly inexperienced Roberts could have been thrown right in during a difficult set of Championship fixtures.
