Everton are in desperate need of a new left-back in their squad and should consider moving for Roma ace Emerson Palmieri in the remainder of the January transfer window.

The Toffees are currently without the injured Leighton Baines and the 33-year-old can’t be relied upon as his best days are numbered, while Cuco Martina is no more than a stopgap replacement.

Sam Allardyce has already signed attacker Cenk Tosun and Theo Walcott in the New Year to breathe new air into this squad, but must now address his full-back situation.

Sky Sports report that Chelsea have made an approach to Italian club Roma about their defender Emerson.

It is claimed that the Blues want to sign the 23-year-old in January and that the Brazilian is in favour of working with manger Antonio Conte.

The report also details that he would be allowed to leave for a fee of around £20million.

Emerson has not played for the majority of the season due to injury and has bene unable to break back into serious first-team contention since his return.

However, Everton should pounce for the left-back’s signature and try to beat Chelsea to him.

The Toffees have proven they can comfortably compete for players in the £20million bracket and the appeal of regular first-team football at Goodison Park should act as a great factor.

They are building a formidable squad that could be lethal if gelled well together and Emerson could be a final piece of the jigsaw.

Everton need a new long-term left-back to rely on and the Roma ace has would move to the Premier League with a good reputation, which has seen Chelsea keen for him.

Emerson has 47 senior appearances for Roma and is renowned for being an attack-minded left-back that can play further forward if required.
