Wolves have been installed as joint favourites to sign Bournemouth centre-forward Benik Afobe before the end of the January transfer window, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

BetVictor priced Wolves at 6/1 at lunchtime on Tuesday to seal a swoop for Afobe, 24, before the January window shuts.

The runaway Championship leaders are neck and neck in the betting race with Crystal Palace, with the pair ahead of Huddersfield and Swansea, who are both 10/1.

The Sun. reported at the weekend that Wolves are in the running to land Afobe but Bournemouth want to recoup the £10million they paid the Midlands club for the centre-forward in January 2016.

Afobe has scored just one goal from 22 appearances for Bournemouth this season, although he has been used as a substitute in 14 of those matches as he finds himself behind Josh King and Jermain Defoe in the pecking order.

Good move for Wolves?

Yes. Afobe has not set the world alight at Bournemouth, where he has been in and out of the side and his 70 appearances have yielded just 11 goals. But he would be an ideal capture for Wolves as they look to nail down promotion and acquire signings who can hit the ground running in the top flight. Afobe was prolific in his first spell at Wolves, scoring 23 goals in 48 matches, and would provide top-quality competition for Leo Bonatini, who has started to feel the strain in recent months.

Likely to happen?

Wolves have money to spend as long as they can continue to operate within the restrictions of financial fair play after spending big last summer to bankroll their return to the Premier League. The team are in the market for a proven striker, so don’t rule out the possibility of Afobe making a winter return to Molineux.
