West Ham could turn their attention to Newcastle United attacker Christian Atsu during the January transfer window, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claims that the Hammers are lining up a move for Middlesbrough wide man Adama Traore as David Moyes prepares to sign a winger during the January transfer window.

It is understood that Atsu has now been considered as an alternative option for the London-based club.

The report comes in the wake of the news that West Ham star man Michail Antonio is set for a spell on the sidelines with a groin injury.

Atsu is currently a regular starter at Premier League outfit Newcastle and is renowned for his electric speed.

The 26-year-old left-winger only moved to St James’ Park on a permanent basis in the summer from Chelsea after helping them secure promotion last season on loan.

Good move for West Ham?

West Ham could be prepared to move for Atsu during the window, but they should stay clear of this deal.

The Ghana international does have a brilliant work-rate and turn of pace, but he is not someone that could make a significant impact at the London Stadium.

He has scored two goals and supplied two assists so far this season, which highlights the main problem that he is inconsistent in front of goal.

Moyes wants to bolster his options out wide and should be searching for a more proven player.

Likely to happen?

West Ham’s main target out wide remains Boro’s Traore and a swoop for Atsu is a long way off at this point.

There is no mention in the report of Newcastle’s potential stance, but he is a key player this campaign under Rafael Benitez and is under contract until 2021.
