West Ham and Everton are both firmly in the running to sign Atletico Madrid attacker Nicolas Gaitan, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

Bet Victor have priced the two Premier League clubs at 4/1 to sign the left-footed playmaker during the January transfer window.

Southampton have been listed as the 2/1 favourites for the Argentina international, while Crystal Palace and Watford are rated at 6/1.

Spanish outlet AS have claimed that La Liga side Atletico are set to let wide man Gaitan leave in January.

They reported that West Ham, Everton, Southampton and Palace were all in the hunt for the winger, who could be available at a cut-price fee of £13million.

It is understood that Everton had made contact to try sign Gaitan, but he is clearly an in-demand player this month.

OPINION

Gaitan has been out of form so far this season, but there is no doubt he would be an excellent signing for mid-level Premier League teams. The Argentinian is a fleet-footed attacker that has shown in the past his quality and was a serial winner during his time at Benfica where he won three consecutive league titles in Portugal. He has been unable to hit top form during his spell in Spain, but a fresh move could help rediscover his best touch and he has the technical ability to ask serious question. Both West Ham and Everton have managed just 25 goals in the opening 22 Premier League games, which indicates how they could do with some attacking reinforcements in January.
