Everton will not sell midfielder Joe Williams in January after Barnsley tabled a £1million bid for him, according to Sky Sports.

The news outlet claimed on its transfer centre blog (5:30pm, Tuesday 2nd January) that the Toffees are not interested in allow the 21-year-old to leave on a permanent basis in the current transfer window.

He is currently on a season-long loan at Championship side Barnsley and it is understood that the Merseyside club plan to keep him at Oakwell until the end of the season.

The Liverpool Echo reported that Barnsley have tabled a £1million bid to try sign the midfield enforcer on a permanent deal, but it seems they have been unsuccessful in their pursuit.

Good move for Everton?

Everton will be making a smart decision by blocking a permanent exit for Williams as his price tag could only rocket up by next summer.

The central midfielder has been a mainstay in the Barnsley team so far this campaign and is helping them fight against relegation in the Championship.

His impressive loan spell should only see his valuation increase and if he continues performing in the Championship he could even be a player for Sam Allardyce to consider.

Likely to happen?

Williams now looks very unlikely to join Barnsley on a permanent basis in January and any potential move would have to wait until the summer.

He will still spend the second half of the season with the Yorkshire giants and Everton will surely keep a close eye on his progress.
