Rangers are reportedly closing in on a loan deal for Norwich defender Russell Martin and Chris Sutton believes it will be a good move for the Scottish giants.

Sky Sports have reported that the Gers have agreed a temporary deal for the 32-year-old and that he is set to undergo a medical at Ibrox on Tuesday.

The no-nonsense centre-back could become the latest January recruit as Light Blues boss Greame Murty looks to significantly improve his squad.

Martin has a wealth of experience in England in both the Premier League and Championship, with most of his time spent at Norwich.

The 29-time capped Scotland international has struggled for minutes this campaign and that has let to a possible loan exit.

BT Sport pundit Sutton feels that it would be an excellent signing for Rangers and that he will set a good example in the dressing room.

“Russell Martin is a loss to Norwich City but Rangers gain… good pro good leader,” Sutton wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Rangers could land Norwich ace Martin on Tuesday afternoon and he will be yet another decent bit of business by Murty. His loan spell should help improve the defensive options and his versatility to play at either full-back or centre-back should help. The Gers have already made some significant additions in the New Year and it would be interesting to see how all the new players gel when the winter break concludes. Rangers easily have enough time to overtake Aberdeen into second in the league and these January additions are exactly the type of players that should have been signed in the summer.
