Moyes pressing owner Sullivan for British players

|

David Moyes is encouraging West Ham owner David Sullivan to buy British players in the January window, according to the Daily Express.

The newspaper claim that the Hammers manager poured cold water on attempts to sign Joao Mario and William Carvalho, with Moyes more keen on signing the likes of Joe Allen and Jonjo Shelvey.

The Daily Express report that West Ham are expected to be busy in the second half of the transfer window, as Moyes is determined to sign at least one midfielder.

The West Ham manager confirmed that the club were unlikely to be successful in their attempts to land Mario or Carvalho.

“One was meant to be a loan and the other would have been a transfer which I don’t think will happen now because Sporting are top of the League,” admitted Moyes.

“So that would be a no as far as I am concerned.”

OPINION

David Moyes is limiting West Ham’s options in the transfer market, with his need for the new arrivals to be British. Deals for Allen and Shelvey both look unlikely, despite their interest being known. Allen and Shelvey would both be expensive signings, especially Allen as Stoke don’t want to sell, meaning there’s cheaper options out there. Moyes’ desire to sign British players could be tied in with the idea that he only wanted to sign those with Premier League experience. The latter wish, making more sense. It’s been proved time and time again, that Premier League experience is vital in a team that’s faced with relegation, just like the Hammers currently are.
