Real Madrid want Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager due to being impressed by Tottenham’s performances in the Champions League, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper claim that the Spanish giants were particularly impressed by Pochettino’s side when the two met in the tournament.

Tottenham earned a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu before achieving a memorable 3-1 victory over Real Madrid at Wembley.

The Daily Mirror report that these performances put Pochettino in the thoughts of Real president Florentino Perez and his colleagues.

A Real Madrid source revealed to the Daily Mirror that any manager who performs like Pochettino did against the club would gain their interest.

“Any coach who holds his own against Madrid is going to be of interest,” the source said to the paper.

“But the way Spurs played also caught the eye.”

The newspaper’s report also added that Harry Kane was thought to be more likely to join Real Madrid if Pochettino was in charge.

The Daily Mail previously reported on Saturday that the Spanish giants had stepped up their pursuit of Pochettino by contacting his associates.

OPINION

It makes sense that Perez and his colleagues were impressed with Pochettino after his side destroyed Real Madrid at Wembley. However, you would think the Spanish giants would want to see more from a manager before making him their first-choice. While Pochettino has done well at Spurs, he hasn’t delivered trophies as of yet, and trophies are vital to Real Madrid. A manager could finish second in the league and runner-up for every trophy they compete for and still be sacked. The La Liga side demand results, therefore you’d think they’d want someone with proven record of winning trophies. Then again may be they want him because they’re that desperate to get Kane.
