Paul Merson has revealed that he believes Tottenham are two injuries away from being in big trouble.

In a column for the Sky Sports website, the pundit revealed that Spurs could do well in the Champions League, after impressing in the group stages, unless their squad gets hit by injuries.

“Tottenham could go far, but they’re two injuries away from being pretty average, let’s be honest,” admitted Merson.

“If Harry Kane got injured they’re hugely impacted, but not just them.

“We saw them go to Man City without their three strongest men; Alderweireld, Wanyama and Sanchez, and they got absolutely rinsed by Man City.”

The pundit continued, sharing that Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team could “give anyone in Europe a game” but if let without key players, then his side would struggle as his squad is not big enough.

Spurs were impressive during the group stages of the Champions League, winning five of their six games.

OPINION

With the January window still open, Spurs could solve Merson’s issue with their Champions League push. It’s hard to argue that Tottenham could do with a few more players; even if they’re just signed with depth in mind. Spurs have seen time and time again, what they’re side look like without key players and it’s not always pretty. The absence of Toby Alderweireld has been notable, with his side only winning one of their first five games after his injury. Merson is right to suggest that Tottenham have a team capable of beating anyone in Europe. However, the club need to acknowledge that is only true when everyone is fit and make signings to avoid this problem.
