Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has opened talks with Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, according to RMC Sport

The French news outlet report that Bordeaux are on the hunt for an attacking player this month, and Mitrovic is said to be at the top of their list.

RMC claim that discussions have begun between the club and Mitrovic’s representatives, but price may be an issue.

It is said that Mitrovic’s high wages are a stumbling block, and it has not been decided if the deal will take the form of a temporary or permanent transfer.

Mitrovic cost the Magpies £13million from Anderlecht in the summer of 2015, and as reported by the Daily Star, he is currently on £60,000-a-week at the club.

Good move for Newcastle United?

It has been clear for months now that Mitrovic is not in Rafa Benitez’s plans at St. James’ Park, and a move this month looks imminent.

The reasons behind Benitez’s decision to continually overlook Mitrovic are unknown, but Newcastle fans are right to question it.

Mitrovic has proved during his time at the club that he carries a real goal threat, and the physical environment of the Premier League seems perfectly suited to his style of play.

With Dwight Gayle and Joselu massively misfiring this term, it seems a strange one that the Magpies are letting the 23-year-old go, but it has been on the cards for a while.

Likely to happen?

Well, it looks as though there are several issues to be ironed out for a deal to take place.

Mitrovic’s wages and potential fee seem to be too high for Bordeaux, although a loan is definitely feasible.

What is likely to happen is a move away for the Serbian striker, but whether that will be to Bordeaux is impossible to say.
