Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to criticise Dwight Gayle for his performance in their team’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Swansea City on Saturday.

Gayle, 27, was named in the Newcastle starting XI as he was given the nod to spearhead the attack ahead of Joselu for his 11th league start of the season and 20th appearance in total in the competition.

But the centre-forward was withdrawn after 65 minutes by Rafael Benitez and replaced by Joselu.

It proved to be an inspired substitution as Joselu equalised just two minutes later, seizing upon Ayoze Perez’s deflected shot to squeeze through defender Alfie Mawson’s legs from a tight angle.

The former Stoke City player’s goal helped Newcastle share the points at St James’ Park after Jordan Ayew had given the visitors the lead.

The Magpies faithful were far more impressed with the contribution of Joselu than they were of Gayle, with many highlighting his lack of physicality as a major problem during a campaign in which he has scored just three goals from 21 matches in all competitions.
