Manchester United have extended the contracts of a string of first teamers including Ashley Young, Juan Mata, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claim that Man United have exercised their options to extend the four players’ deals by 12 months in order to stop the quartet becoming free agents in the summer.

The Telegraph report that even though their contracts have been extended the long-term futures of Mata, Blind and Young still remain uncertain.

With the deals only being extended to give Jose Mourinho further time to decide what to do with the players, as well as boost their transfer value.

The same report believes the club is willing to listen to offers for Blind with Mata’s future dependent on whether Henrikh Mkhitaryan leaves the club.

Young has a chance of staying longer due to his recent performances and attitude, as well as Manchester United’s having doubts over their other right-back option Matteo Darmian.

OPINION

This is a smart move by Manchester United, and it’s nothing less than you would expect. The club would have been foolish to let any of these four players go when they could simply extend their deals in order to gain a transfer fee for their exit. While some of the quartet may stay longer than when their new contract ends, June 2019, at least two will end up departing the club before then.
