Manchester United are set to offer David De Gea a new long-term contract that would see him earn in the region of £250,000-a-week, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper claim that Ed Woodward plans to open talks with the goalkeeper’s representatives about a new deal, which would see him spend his whole career at the club.

The Daily Mirror report that a long-term contract is being offered to the 27-year-old to ensure his Manchester United future and cool Real Madrid’s interest in the goalkeeper.

De Gea currently has 18 months left on his deal, that sees him earn £190,000-per-week, but Man Utd do have an option to extend his contract to 2020.

Jose Mourinho spoke about De Gea’s contract situation ahead of Manchester United playing Stoke City on Monday.

“The option, it’s obvious that we’re not going to let the option disappear,” said Mourinho, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.

“A goalkeeper like he is and obviously a club that wants to be better and better and better, we’re not going to let that year option go away. But obviously we’re going to try.”

The Spanish international has featured 27 times for Man United this season, conceding 19 goals and keeping 15 clean sheets.

OPINION

De Gea has been a vital part of Manchester United’s first-team for many seasons now. If the club could ensure that he was their goalkeeper for many more seasons to come, then it would be an amazing bit of business. While £250,000-per-week seems like a lot, that no player could justify, De Gea is the exception. It’s due to his superb shot stopping ability that Man United have won games rather than earned draws at times this season. It’s unthinkable that Manchester United would be able to get a goalkeeper as good as him anytime soon. So if a new long-term deal stops rumours of a move to Real Madrid, then Man United need to act fast to wrap this deal up.
