Arsenal are set to battle Manchester United over Shakhtar Donetsk’s midfielder Fred, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claim that, after recent reports from abroad about several clubs chasing Fred, it’s Arsenal and Manchester United that have serious interest in him.

The Daily Star report Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho are keen to sign Fred as they aim to bolster their squads in order to compete with Manchester City.

The report suggests that Shakhtar Donetsk are planning on listening to offers for the star who is rated at £30million.

The midfielder is known for his defensive contribution in midfield along with his ability to create chances through his superb passing ability.

Fred has been a controversial footballer in the past, having previously served a drug ban after failing a test in 2015.

Good move for Arsenal?

There are definitely footballers with less notable pasts given Fred’s failed drug test, but the 24-year-old has since shown himself to be a capable player.

Fred has made 24 appearances for Shakhtar this season and has been impressive despite only grabbing a couple of goals and assists.

Wenger has the experience in order to make sure the Gunners got the best out of Fred if he signed.

The midfielder given his defensive qualities, would be an asset to Arsenal’s team.

Likely to happen?

There’s a lot of interest in the midfielder, and a deal happening really depends on who leaves the Gunners.

If Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez were both to depart, the club would make big-name signings in order to boost the team and morale, with Fred fitting that mold.

However, given his previous drug suspensions, Arsenal probably would go for a signing that wouldn’t gain them any negative attention.
