Shayon Harrison has expressed his delight on Twitter at agreeing a loan move from Tottenham to Southend United.

The Spurs centre-forward announced on his personal Twitter account on deadline day that he was “delighted” to join the League One club for the rest of the campaign and is looking forward to making his debut in their league clash against Peterborough United on Saturday.

Harrison is a regular member of the Tottenham Under-23s but has not added to the single substitute appearance he made for the senior side last season, which came in a League Cup defeat to Liverpool in October 2016.

The academy product has been given the green light to go out on loan for the second time in two seasons after a spell at League Two outfit Yeovil Tow in the second half of last season.

Southend are 17th in League One and fighting to avoid relegation to the fourth tier of English football.

They recently appointed former England left-back and ex-Spurs coach Chris Powell as their new manager.

OPINION

It is the ideal time for Harrison to go out on loan and show that he can replicate his prolific scoring at youth team level in senior football. The young centre-forward did not do as well as many had hope during a loan spell at Yeovil last season, scoring just once in 15 matches, but he has continued to plunder goals back at his parent club, with 20 strikes in total from 41 Premier League 2 appearances. Those are statistics that have made lower league clubs sit up and take notice. If Harrison can make more of an impact in a second loan spell, and Southend appear to be the right type of club for him, it could propel him up the pecking order at Tottenham and possibly even into the thoughts of manager Mauricio Pochettino.
