Waddle unsure on Everton interest in Walcott

|

Chris Waddle has revealed he’s unsure whether Everton are right to pursue Theo Walcott when they already have Aaron Lennon.

While on BBC Radio 5 Live, the pundit shared a lot of concerns about the Toffees potentially signing the Arsenal attacker in the January transfer window.

“He’s (Walcott) on big wages by all accounts, which will be a problem for Everton and Southampton, I’m sure,” said Waddle.

“He’s got pace, he can offer that, you just think will he get in the team?”

“What’s Aaron Lennon got, Aaron I’ll probably say is better on the ball but as a goal threat Walcott is better.”

The pundit eventually stated that “there wasn’t a lot between” the two players, which led the pundit to believe Walcott wouldn’t be guaranteed to play every week, even if Everton spend a lot on him.

It was previously reported by the Daily Mirror, that the Toffees were ready to bid £20million for the 28-year-old as well as match his Arsenal wages of £140,000 per week.

The winger, whose known for his speed, has made 15 appearances and scored four goals for the Gunners this season.

However, none of his goals have come in his five Premier League appearances.

OPINION

Lennon has featured regularly for Everton since Sam Allardyce has taken over, and hasn’t let the club down. While the 30-year-old isn’t contributing goals, his work rate, has been vital in the Toffees surge up the table. The former England international has showcased a fight and desire to play for the club, something that shouldn’t go unnoticed. Walcott may be a high profile signing for the Toffees, but it’s hard to not have doubts, given his cost. If Everton were to fork out £20million and pay his £140,000-per-week wages, than he will be one expensive player. Waddle is right to question whether Walcott is worth the outlay given the fact, he doesn’t offer much more than Lennon.
