Everton are set to be without James McCarthy for up to a year following the midfielder suffering a double leg break, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper claim that the midfielder will undergo delicate surgery on Monday in order to shorten his recovery time.

McCarthy broke his tibia and fibula during the 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion, after a freak accident saw his studs get stuck in the ground.

The 27-year-old sustained his injury when making a last ditch block to deny Solomon Rondon a opportunity at goal.

Allardyce previously confirmed that the central midfielder would miss the rest of the campaign and much of next season.

McCarthy has only made six appearances this season for the Toffees, with a hamstring and knee injury keeping him from being available.

OPINION

It’s such shame that after finally returning from injury, McCarthy could be out for almost a year. The midfielder worked hard to get back in the Toffees team, and all his hard work has gone to waste. It was a freaky accident that saw him sustained the injury, and the midfielder will no doubt be cursing his luck. Hopefully, McCarthy’s surgery is a success on Monday, and he defies expectations by returning quicker than expected. It’s also good that the midfielder has someone who understands what he is going through in the form of Seamus Coleman. The Everton right-back suffered a similar injury and will no doubt be good support for his teammate.
