Arsenal fans took to Twitter to lay into Danny Welbeck for his performance in their 0-0 League Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Welbeck was given the nod to start ahead of the benched Alexis Sanchez in a new-look Gunners forward line in which he slotted in alongside Alex Iwobi behind spearhead Alexandre Lacazette.

But the former Manchester United forward failed to make much of an impact in what was a cagey affair, although the result will suit Arsenal ahead of the second leg at Emirates Stadium in a fortnight’s time.

After making its debut in Monday’s FA Cup third-round tie between Brighton and Crystal Palace, the video assistant referee was once again used at Stamford Bridge.

Referee Martin Atkinson consulted the VAR on two Chelsea penalty claims, when Victor Moses tangled with Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the first half and for Danny Welbeck’s last-minute challenge on Cesc Fabregas, but he was satisfied enough with the evidence relayed to him not to award a spot-kick.

Alexandre Lacazette blazed Arsenal’s best chance over the bar in the first half as he got little in the way of top quality support from those behind him.

Welbeck had a poor performance for the visitors and he came in for some scathing criticism on Twitter.
