Newcastle United could sign Manchester City’s defensive colossus Eliaquim Mangala on loan for the rest of the season, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper claims in on its live transfer blog (6:54pm, Monday 29) that Premier League leaders Man City have given the green light to send the defender out on loan.

It is understood that Pep Guardiola’s side are closing on America Laporte from Atletic Bilbao and will sanction the temporary exit of Mangala as a result.

The report details that Newcastle are currently in talks with Man City about the 26-year-old.

Rafael Benitez’s team may have to pay the majority of the centre-back’s £80,000-a-week wage, but they have been given promises over finances for January additions.

Good move for Newcastle?

Mangala may not be a regular starter at the Etihad Stadium, but he cost Man City £40million and would be a great signing for Newcastle.

The eight-time capped France international would be a massive boost to the Magpies in their fight against relegation and walk into the starting XI.

He is a no-nonsense defensive enforcer that should thrive at St James’ Park and is exactly the type of high-profile signing the club want to improve their side.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle fans have waited patiently in the January window for signings and it seems they could be about to land Man City’s centre-back.

Guardiola will allow Mangala to depart despite him making 15 appearances this season and a switch to St James’ Park is certainly on the cards as talks are ongoing.
