Wolves have opened talks with Bournemouth about signing striker Lewis Grabban, according to a reliable journalist.

Guardian Sport’s deputy news editor Ed Aarons reported on his personal Twitter account on Sunday afternoon that the Championship leaders are in negotiations with the Premier League outfit about a deal for Grabban, 29.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has said the centre-forward will leave Bournemouth in the January transfer window after returning early from a season-long loan with Sunderland.

Grabban, 29, spent five months with the rock-bottom Championship side, scoring an impressive 12 goals in 19 league appearances.

The Cherries signed Grabban for a second time for £7million in January 2016 after he impressed with Norwich, but he has made just four Premier League starts for the club.

His record in the Championship is particularly impressive, with 125 appearances in the competition yielding 50 goals and 11 assists.

OPINION

What a fine signing Grabban would be for Wolves this month. He would take some of the goalscoring pressure off Leo Bonatini, who has not scored in the Midlands clubs’ last seven league fixtures, and offer another dimension to an already multi-faceted front line. A proven goalscorer at Championship level, Grabban was excellent for rock-bottom club Sunderland in the first half of the campaign, and Bournemouth have given him the green light to make a permanent exit this month. With the reliable Aarons reporting that talks over a deal are now underway and Wolves well able to afford the £5million-plus fee needed to land the striker, this appears to have a genuine chance of going through this month.
