Aston Villa winger Birkir Bjarnason is the subject of intense interest from Serie A side SPAL after his agent admitted he would like a move back to Italy, according to Tutto Mercato Web

The Italian football site reports that SPAL manager Leonardo Semplici is keen on a move for Bjarnason, and has made several approaches to sound out a January move for the Iceland international.

Tutto Mercato claim that Bjarnason, who has played for Sampdoria and Pescara in Serie A, would be open to a move back to Italy.

His agent, Jim Solbakken, is quoted as saying: “Birkir would like to return to Serie A, he was very good in Italy and would like to play again in the Italian league.

“But he is totally focused on Aston Villa: the club is fighting to get back in the Premier League his only thought is to do well with his club. We’ll see what happens.”

Bjarnason was a £1.8million signing from FC Basel one year ago.

Good move for Aston Villa?

If Villa were able to make their money back, or even some profit on Bjarnason, then it would be a good move for all parties.

The Iceland international has failed to make an impact at Villa Park, making just 20 appearances in all competitions since his move last January.

He has shown glimpses of his quality, but does not truly look like nailing down a first-team place any time soon.

If Serie A clubs want him, and are willing to pay an acceptable fee, it would be best for all involved to complete a deal.

Likely to happen?

Well, his agent’s comments would seem to suggest that Bjarnason will push for a move this month, despite insisting he is focused on Villa.

And, with SPAL reportedly holding great interest in the winger, then an offer looks likely to materialise at some point in the near future.

It is not known what Steve Bruce or the club think of a potential exit for Bjarnason, but if it allows him to find a replacement then they should be willing.
