Glenn Whelan completed 65 minutes in the 2-0 defeat against Derby on Saturday – and the Aston Villa fans on Twitter destroyed him for his performance.
The 33-year-old has been an ever-present in the side so far this campaign and the central midfielder got a starting role at the weekend in the away Championship clash against Derby.
It was a former Villa player who proved decisive in the game as Andreas Weimann netted the opening goal in the 24th minute, while Johnny Russell went on to score a late second in injury-time of the second-half.
Whelan was at major fault for the goal his side conceded in the first-half as his back-pass was intended for the goalkeeper, but he gifted the ball to Matej Vydra who then squared it to Weimann to score.
The result means that Steve Bruce’s side are now without a win in their last three league games and are going through a tricky patch of form.
Villa fans on social media decided to take out their frustrations with senior midfielder Whelan after his costly mistake and believe he should be axed from the side moving forward.

Whelan will be extremely frustrated that his individual error proved costly against Derby and he is often criticised by the club’s fans.
The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international is a preferred option in the centre of the pitch due to his work-rate and protection of the back four, but could now find himself under real pressure for a starting XI berth.
He will hope to make amends in the next game as Villa look to reignite their promotion bid with a home clash against Sheffield United.
