Walsh due for January exit

|

Liam Walsh is on the verge of quitting Everton to sign for Bristol City, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that Robins manager Lee Johnson has been given the green light to make bid for the midfielder, 20, when the transfer window re-opens within the next few weeks.

The Sun report that Walsh is set to join the Championship club for a fee of around £1million after Johnson held a productive meeting with his advisers.

It is said that the youngster is about to exit Everton and the deal will be done when the January window opens.

Walsh joined Birmingham on loan in the summer but then returned to Goodison Park earlier than planned last month after he slipped down the pecking order following Harry Redknapp’s sacking.

Everton face the prospect of losing a couple of midfielders in January with Ross Barkley’s future also under question.

OPINION

With no immediate prospect of getting in the Everton team, where his path is blocked by the likes of Idrissa Gueye, Tom Davies and Morgan Schneiderlin, Walsh is better off moving to a club where his first team prospects are realistic. The 20-year-old does not look cut out for the Premier League, but has what it takes to carve out a niche in the Championship at a club where he can hope to play regularly. Bristol City don’t have the financial resources of the big guns in the second tier and would be pushing the boat out for a £1million fee.
