Paul Scholes has admitted that he fears for Newcastle United this season in their fight against relegation and insists that they don’t score enough goals.

The Magpies recorded a 0-0 draw at home to Brighton on Saturday in the Premier League and will feel like it was two points dropped.

Rafael Benitez’s side were unable to score a winning goal in a fairly dull affair at St James’ Park and their poor form continues.

The North East club picked up just four points out of a possible 21 during December and are just a point above the drop zone in the league.

Ex-England international and now pundit Scholes feels that Newcastle could be in real trouble this campaign due to their inability to score goals.

They have now scored just 19 goals in their opening 21 games, which is a stark comparison to their goalscoring prowess in their Championship title winning form last season.

“I think Newcastle have to be worried,” Scholes told BT Sport programme Live Premier League Tonight (9pm, Saturday 30th December).

“Brighton at home today, they need to win those types of games and they look like they are in free-fall right now. It’s the same problem with these teams, they can’t score goals.”

OPINION

It is very clear to Newcastle fans that they need to strengthen their attacking options in the January transfer window, but the potential takeover looming over the club is a dark cloud. Benitez’s side are going to be battling relegation all season if they do not strengthen as Joselu, Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic do not have the firepower to help Newcastle steer away from the bottom. Newcastle need to at least enter the loan market for a proven Premier League goalscorer if they do not have finances made available to them as that will be the difference for them this campaign.
