Newcastle United would be willing to sell Jonjo Shelvey in order to ensure Rafa Benitez transfer funds in January, according to The Sun.

The newspaper claim that with the Magpies waiting on funds from a possible takeover, the club may opt to sell Shelvey in order to guarantee cash in the January window.

The Sun report that West Ham and Crystal Palace are both interested, with Shelvey likely to attract offers in the region of £10million.

The midfielder has made 15 appearances in the Premier League for the Magpies this season, but has found himself become not a guaranteed starter under Benitez.

Good move for Newcastle United?

While Shelvey has had a mixed season and doesn’t seem to be one of Benitez’s favourites, on his day, he is one of the Magpies best players.

There are few players in the Premier League that have his passing ability, and he can be a match winner.

Also with relegation rivals West Ham and Crystal Palace the only clubs reportedly interested at the moment, Newcastle United would be foolish to sell a player that could improve their competition.

Likely to happen?

If the takeover continues to stall, then the chances of it happening increase as Benitez knows he needs new signings after a disappointing summer window.

However, while Newcastle United may be motivated to sell to raise funds,it seems unlikely they’d send Shelvey to a relegation rival even if the offer was right.
