Tottenham are keeping close tabs on Schalke midfielder Max Meyer ahead of a possible move next summer, according to Football London.

The Trinity Mirror football site claim that the north Londoners are in the hunt to sign the Germany international, 22, who is available on a free next June.

Football London report “everything about him screams Tottenham transfer” given his age, talent and potential availability within just months.

It is said that Spurs “showed no interest in the player last summer” amid fears his development has stagnated but he could come back into their sights at the end of the current campaign.

OPINION

Meyer has pedigree and immense talent but has not kicked on since he was earmarked as one of the outstanding young players in the Bundesliga a few years ago. He has perhaps suffered from a series of positional changes, as the dazzling wide man who scored five league goals and supplied eight assists in 2015-16 has played predominantly in central midfield this season. Is Meyer better than what Spurs already have in that position? He would edge Moussa Sissoko, but the rest of Mauricio Pochettino’s central midfield options – Mousa Dembele, Harry Winks, Eric Dier and the-soon-to-be-fit Victor Wanyama are all currently superior. It appears that, if the manager can squeeze a few pounds out of Daniel Levy, Tottenham would be better off going big for Everton’s Ross Barkley.
