Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to pan Mohamed Diame for his performance in their team’s 3-1 Premier League defeat to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.
Diame was surprisingly given the nod to start in central midfield alongside Mikel Merino ahead of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden, who were both on the substitute’s bench.
It was only the third league start of the season for Senegal international Diame, who has been on the fringes of the side for most of the campaign.
Chelsea’s convincing win, secured through an Eden Hazard double and a first-half Alvaro Morata header, lifted them to third in the Premier League table and level on points with second-placed Manchester United, who play Arsenal on Saturday evening.
Supporters had expressed their misgivings about Diame’s selection before kick-off, and were brutal on social media about the 30-year-old during the match and in the immediate aftermath.
