Newcastle United have been dealt a massive blow in their pursuit of Chelsea flyer Kenedy after Russian giants Lokomotiv Moscow hijacked their bid to sign the 21-year-old, according to a reliable journalist.

Alfredo Pedulla, who is a renowned Italian football journalist, reports on his personal website that Russian league leaders Lokomotiv are already negotiating a deal with the Blues.

Newcastle had been thought to be in pole position for the versatile youngster, with the Daily Mail previously reporting that the Magpies had secured a loan deal for January.

Kenedy usually operates at left-back but can also play in a more advanced role, and Newcastle reportedly came close to a loan deal for him in the summer too.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Well, if the Magpies can ward off the competition, then yes.

Kenedy has never really been given a chance at Chelsea, and that is understandable with the quality they have in their squad.

But he could really be of use to a lower-table team such as Newcastle, with his versatility down the left flank priceless in the upcoming battle against relegation.

With the Magpies possibly limited to loan deals in January, this would be a good way to start the window.

Likely to happen?

The deal looked all but done, but now Lokomotiv’s reported advances have thrown a spanner in the works.

They are enjoying a brilliant season in the Russian league, currently holding an eight-point lead at the top of the table with 10 games to go.

Where Kenedy ends up may come down to his personal wishes, and he could be attracted by the possibility of winning a trophy in Russia.

On the other hand, he may want to stay in England and try to impress for Newcastle, which be a massive boost for Rafa Benitez as he looks to save his side’s season.
