Lazar Markovic will leave Liverpool in the January transfer window if a buyer meets their £16million asking price, according to the Echo.

The newspaper claim the winger, 23, will be put up for sale once again after the Merseysiders could not seal a transfer during the summer window.

The Echo report that there was interest from Watford, Fiorentina and Zenit St Petersburg in Markovic but none were willing to meet the £16million asking price.

It is said that “Liverpool believe there will be more takers in January” for the transfer committee signing who arrived from Benfica for £20million in the summer of 2014.

Markovic has not played a single minute for Liverpool this season after failing to secure a move away from the club in the summer, and has not played for the club in two-and-a-half years.

OPINION

It does not require the investigative skills of Poirot and Miss Marple to deduce that Markovic is definitely for sale but Liverpool want to recoup most of their fee of three-and-half years ago. Markovic flopped on loan at Fenerbahce and Sporting Lisbon but revived his career under Marco Silva at Hull in the second half of last season, much as Mamadou Sakho did at Crystal Palace. Silva wassaid to be keen to take the Serbian wide man to Watford in the summer but they would have had to shatter their transfer record to land the 23-year-old. There appears zero chance of the one-paced Markovic appearing in a Liverpool shirt again. That is not to say he cannot be a decent Premier League player, as time is still on his side.
