Jon Flanagan looks set for an exit from Liverpool in January amid interest from Premier League rivals Burnley, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that the Anfield academy product, 24, could quit next month before his contract expires next summer.

The Sun report that Flanagan is looking to resurrect his career after several injury setbacks and could move to another Premier League club if a concerted bid is made.

It is said that Burnley may come back in for the right-back even though he struggled to make an impact at Turf Moor last season, when he made just 10 appearances.

Liverpool-born Flanagan made his debut for the Reds in 2011 after coming through the academy, and impressed initially under Brendan Rodgers.

A serious knee injury that required two operations has hampered him since, and he has failed to force his way into first-team contention under Jurgen Klopp this season.

OPINION

Given that Burnley began the weekend sixth in the Premier League table after conceding just 12 goals in 18 league games, it is a compliment to Flanagan that one of the division’s meanest defences are keen to sign him again even though he was not a regular for them last season. When it comes to cherry-picking defenders and organising rearguard efforts, Sean Dyche certainly knows his onions and a transfer to Lancashire makes sense for Flanagan. At Anfield, he is behind young guns Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the right-back pecking order as well as senior man Nathaniel Clyne, who has not played yet this season due to injury. Flanagan is fourth in line, but showed in Liverpool’s 2013-14 campaign that he is a full-back of genuine pedigree. He still has much to offer at the top level.
