Jurgen Klopp dropped the bombshell on Tuesday that Liverpool could sell Philippe Coutinho in January – and fans went into meltdown on Twitter.
Coutinho was the subject of a series of £100million-plus bids from Barcelona over the summer and it has been widely speculated that the Spanish giants are working on a deal to prise him from Anfield in next month’s winter window.
Klopp spoke of his confidence in the summer that the Brazilian playmaker would stay, but his stance was far less certain at a media conference on Tuesday to preview Wednesday night’s Champions League clash against Spartak Moscow.
Asked what makes him sure Coutinho will still be at Liverpool in February, Klopp said: “Nothing. I don’t think about it. It’s not one second that I’ve thought about it. I have a team to prepare for games. I’m not sure, I’m not unsure. No-one knows what will happen in January.”
Coutinho tried to engineer a transfer to Barcelona in August but has put his disappointment to one side to deliver a series of outstanding displays for Liverpool, including in last Saturday’s 5-1 win against Brighton when he wreaked havoc in a front three with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
The Brazilian has scored six goals and supplied seven assists from 13 matches in all competitions this season.
Liverpool fans are unhappy that Klopp is unsure over whether Coutinho will stay and predicted that the manager’s public display of uncertainty is a sure sign that the player is leaving.

Wow, I can’t believe Klopp doesn’t know if Coutinho will be sold in January, this would be outrageous by FSG if they did sell him https://t.co/Af4kIED9mr
