Marcus Tavernier has agreed a new deal at Middlesbrough, he confirmed on Twitter on Friday morning.

The winger, 18, took to his personal Twitter account to reveal that he has signed a contract with the Championship club and is “delighted” to have extended his stay.

This comes after reliable sports news site Football Insider claim has spurned interest from Premier League big guns Everton and Arsenal to sign a new three-and-a-half year deal at the Riverside.

It is said that the recruitment teams of the big spending top flight duo have been impressed by the winger, 18, and made approaches about the possibility of signing him ahead of the January window.

Teen sensation Tavernier became Boro’s third youngest league goalscorer this century after finding the net in the 1-0 win over crisis-hit Sunderland last month and has scored two goals in seven matches to date in his debut season.

OPINION

Everton have prioritised the signings of top young English talent since Steve Walsh took over as the director of football with a mandate to combine the club’s emerging academy stars with the best teenagers from across the country. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Sheffield United) and Ademola Lookman (Charlton Athletic) are among those who have been prised from clubs outside of the Premier League in recent times, with both already making an impact for the Everton first team. The word on the street is that Walsh and his recruitment team were keen for Tavernier to make a similar journey from the Football League to Goodison Park. It is smart work of Boro to tie down Tavernier given that the transfer window opens in just over a fortnight, when they were vulnerable to a bid from the big-spending Merseysiders.
