Arsenal are close to signing Schalke midfield goal machine Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, according to the Sun.
The newspaper claim that Arsene Wenger’s sign are on the brink of winning the race for the in demand Germany international, 22, whose contract at the Bundesliga outfit expires next summer.
It is said that the Gunners are “confident” they have an agreement in place to secure the signature of Goretzka, who is keen to swap the Bundesliga for the Premier League.
The Sun report that Arsenal are set to land Goretzka for free when his contract expires but they willing to give him a hefty signing-on bonus, along with a sizeable wage packet.
Good move for Arsenal?
Goretzka is not just a rising star of German football, he is an established one. He has already made 130 appearances for Schalke as well as 12 for the Germany senior team, which have yielded six goals, a huge number for a central midfielder. The youngster is something of a goal machine, striking four times from 12 Schalke appearances this season, including in three consecutive Bundesliga matches in October. Goretzka could be a brilliant signing, a kind of souped-up version of Aaron Ramsey.

Likely to happen?
A deal is highly possible and would mirror the purchase of Saed Kolasinac, who was signed on a free during the summer after running down his contract at Schalke. With Goretzka also available for nothing next summer, he could be another bargains signing. There is intense competition for his signature, but the Wenger factor could prove key for a player who appears to have made it his mission to move to the Premier League.
