Newcastle United will sell their defender Chancel Mbemba in the January transfer window, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper claims that the Magpies have decided to axe the 23-year-old in the New Year, while centre-forward Aleksandar Mitrovic is also set for a St James’ Park exit.

It is understood that manager Rafael Benitez is drawing up plans for when the window re-opens next month and powerhouse centre-back will be allowed to leave as the club look to cash in on him.

The Chronicle previously reported back in October that Newcastle would only be prepared to sell the Congo international if they received a substantial bid and if they signed a replacement first.

However, it seems that the North East club will now sell the defender as Benitez looks to cash in on him.

Good move for Newcastle?

Newcastle are hopeful of improving their squad in January and may need to balance the books in order to do so.

However, selling defender Mbemba could be a mistake as his versatility makes him a useful member of the squad.

The 23-year-old has slotted in well at both left-back and centre-back so far this campaign, making nine appearances across all competitions.

Benitez’s side have lacked defensively at times this season and Mbemba still has a lot of potential to fulfil at St James’ Park.

Likely to happen?

Mbemba has been in and out of the Newcastle side this campaign, which suggests he will be unable to cement a starting XI position under Benitez in the second half of the season.

The powerhouse defender looks set for the exit doors as the manager oversees a reshuffle in his squad.
