Aston Villa are among several Championship clubs interested in signing prolific Peterborough striker Jack Marriott in the January window, according to the Daily Mail.

Marriott has been in red-hot form for Posh this season, netting 17 times in 30 League One appearances so far since making the move from Luton Town in the summer.

His goalscoring record has caught the eye of a number of Championship clubs, with Sunderland, Millwall and QPR also tracking the 23-year-old.

It is said that a deal may be on the cards at around £2.5million, but Peterborough owner Darragh McAnthony is expected to drive a hard bargain for his star man.

Good move for Aston Villa?

If there is one player that Villa need right now, it is a goalscoring striker.

With Jonathan Kodjia out for the foreseeable future through injury, and Scott Hogan and Gabby Agbonlahor also struggling for fitness, youngster Keinan Davis has led the line alone recently.

Goals have not necessarily been an issue for the team, with players stepping up from elsewhere, but Villa still desperately need a striker who will score at regular intervals.

Marriott, with 17 goals so far this year, looks like a player who can do that. Granted, he has been playing at a level below the Championship, but the 23-year-old looks a genuine goal threat, and at £2.5million he could be an absolute steal for Steve Bruce in January.

Likely to happen?

While Peterborough manager Grant McCann will be loathe to lose such a key player half way through the season, especially considering he only just joined the club in the summer, it is hard to see a Championship move not materialising for Marriott in January.

With so many clubs interested, it looks likely that he will leave London Road sooner rather than later, unless the player himself wants to stay at the club for the rest of the season.

Villa will have to show their serious to beat off the competition, and if Bruce is willing to go above the valuation and try and strike a deal around £3million, then Villa could very well be welcoming a new face to the squad.
