Mason Holgate completed 90 minutes in the defeat to Lyon on Thursday – and Everton fans ripped into him on Twitter for his performance.
The 21-year-old defender was given the opportunity to start the game at centre-back as he partnered Ashley Williams.
However, the duo were part of a defence that was blown away by Lyon and a 3-0 defeat meant the Toffees were knocked out of the Europa League.
Bertrand Traore, Houssem Aouar and Memphis Depay scored second-half goals for the hosts to inflict more misery on Everton’s temporary manager David Unsworth.
The Merseyside club have now lost their last five consecutive games and have a final Premier League clash at home to Watford before the international break.
Everton fans on social media singled out young defender Holgate after the Lyon defeat and feel that he is out of his depth right now.

Holgate is yet to fully cement his position in the Everton side, but has made nine appearances across all competitions this season due to the club’s problem in defence.
The England Under-21 international is regarded as a centre-back by trade, but has had to fill in at full-back for much of his senior career.
He got the opportunity to impress in his favoured position and failed to make the most of it.
Holgate was caught out of position several times against Lyon and also lacked the physical presence to dominate the attackers.
