Wolves on verge of £20m club-record signing

|

Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the verging of securing a £20million club-record signing, according to a reliable journalist.

TeamTalk editor James Marshment reported on his personal Twitter account early on Monday afternoon that the Championship leaders are working on a stunning new deal.

The self-confessed Leeds United fan added that the “likely” Wolves signing showed what his own team “are up against” as both sides vie for promotion to the Premier League.

Marshment does not name the player Wolves are close to landing but his Twitter post will prompt speculation from excited fans given his reputation for delivering accurate transfer information.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side went into the international break top of the Championship after an excellent start to the season that has yielded 35 points from 16 league fixtures.

OPINION

These are exciting times at Molineux as speculation mounts that owners, the Chinese investment company Fosun International, will back Nuno to the hilt in January to ensure the team’s promotion bid stays on course. The Shanghai-based conglomerate have already spent massively over the last two seasons, using the expertise and contacts of super-agent Jorge Mendes. They splashed out a club-record £15million on Ruben Neves and bought Helder Costa (£13million), Ivan Cavaleiro (£7million), Romain Saiss (£3million) and Roderick Miranda (£2million) as well as brilliant loan acquisitions Leo Bonatini and Diogo Jota. It appears that Financial Fair Play rules are the main barrier to lavish winter spending on a team that already looks well equipped to stay the distance.
