Wolves – Will they win the Championship?

|

Wolverhampton Wanderers have undoubtedly been the standout team in the Sky Bet Championship so far.

At the time of writing, the Black Country side sit top of the Championship table having amassed an impressive 35 points from 16 league games.

It was a Portuguese revolution at Wolves in the summer, as Jorge Mendes exerted his influence on the side – bringing in a whole host of players from Europe and of course the highly-rated manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Santo has seemingly adapted to life in the Championship with ease, as he has implemented a superb blend of attacking football, that is fluid and free-flowing – other Championship sides just cannot cope.

There is a reason that so many bookmakers are placing Wolves as the clear favourites for the Championship table, and you wouldn’t be a mug to put a bet on them to do it. Get all the latest free bets and betting offers here.

Wolves’ attacking trio of Diogo Jota, Leo Bonatini and Ivan Cavaleiro is arguably the best offensive force in the second tier, and between them they have the firepower to help Wolves to the title.

It’s not just offensively that Wolves are good, they are just as adept defensively too.

Santo’s utilisation of wing-backs has proved incredibly effective, with Barry Douglas and Matt Doherty so important to how Wolves operate.

Can they seal the job and win the league title?

Surely no other team can compete with the sensational football that Wolves play.

Wolves face off against Jaap Stam’s Reading on Saturday at the Madejski Stadium, and Santo’s side are probably facing the Berkshire outfit at the wrong time.

Reading are enjoying a mini revival in form as they have won their last two league games, and seem full of confidence, with John Swift showcasing his potential.

Wolves face Reading, Leeds, Bolton, Birmingham, Sunderland and Sheffield Wedneday in their next six league matches, and Santo will undoubtedly look to attain maximum points from these upcoming fixtures.

Recently, there were rumours linking Premier League side Everton with a move for Nuno Santo – news that would have worried Wolves fans.

But it hasn’t materialised, and Santo looks fully committed to the project at hand at Molineux and looks up for finishing the job with Wolves.

The tough part for Wolves will come in the dark winter months, the Januarys and Februarys of this world.

All of the continental players, the likes of Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota will have to adapt to the freezing conditions and be able to perform at the same level during these testing few months.

So far, it seems that the Portuguese contingent are adapting perfectly to the rigours and demands of playing frequent Championship football – but the upcoming months will be the real test for the stars.

Wolves undoubtedly have the most balanced and impressive squad in the league, and they would be worthy winners of the league if they can maintain this excellent streak of form.
