Charlie Nicholas has revealed that he would look to appoint Alex McLeish as manager if he was at Rangers.

The Gers are still still on the search for Pedro Caixinha’s full-time successor as Graeme Murty continues in temporary charge.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has been the long-time favourite for the vacant position at Ibrox and is still regarded as the frontrunner by bookmakers Sky Bet.

However, McLeish is priced as the second favourite for the role at Ibrox and previously took charge of the club between 2001-06

The 58-year-old has confirmed that he has not been approach for the job by Rangers chiefs despite his name appearing to be in hat.

Sky Sports pundit Nicholas has explained that the Gers should have turned immediately to McLeish after Caixinha’s dismissal and believes he could help steady the ship.

“If I was Rangers beforehand they needed Alex McLeish in to just get the thing stabilised and move it forward,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“Rangers’ AGM meeting is tomorrow. If I was them I would have gone for McLeish to stabilise and wait to see what develops from the summer, but Alex may not have agreed for a short-term contract.”

Rangers’ managerial search has dragged on for far too long now and performances are beginning to drop on the pitch as a result. They have lost their last two matches against Dundee and Hamilton, which has seen them drop down to fourth in the league table and they now have a huge double header against Aberdeen. They start on Wednesday night by hosting the Dons in the first of two league encounters and are in desperate need of a positive result to lift them. Meanwhile, Rangers’ board need to make a decisive decision to announce their next manager immediately and give the new man time to make an impact.
